Description and scope of the Legal Hub
The Legal Hub is a competence hub for legal questions relating to artificial intelligence (AI). It has been set up within the Competence Network for Artificial Intelligence (CNAI). The hub is run by the Directorate of International Law (DIL) and the Federal Office of Justice (FOJ). The aim of the Legal Hub is to provide support for services within the Federal Administration faced with legal questions relating to AI. Support can include reviewing analyses carried out by a service within the Federal Administration or answering concrete and specific questions. The Legal Hub’s resources are limited and it is unable to provide the services of a conventional legal service, such as detailed analyses of the legal implications of using an AI system or assisting with entire projects.
To provide concrete examples, the Legal Hub has compiled a list of FAQs for services wishing to use AI systems to carry out their work.
The answers presented here are not universally applicable. Each case must be examined individually and a detailed legal analysis carried out.
Services working on legislative projects that deal with digitalisation can contact the FOJ’s Unit for Legislation on Digitalisation Matters, who can advise them from the beginning of the legislative process.
